Thousands of L.A. buildings at risk from quakes

Even after multiple revisions to seismic codes, thousands of buildings in Los Angeles remain vulnerable to earthquakes, a leading expert told the City Council Friday.

A spokesman for the Building Industry Association of Los Angeles-Ventura Counties, said they welcome working with the city on new codes. "Building codes are an ongoing process," BIA spokesman John Frith said. "We just tightened them a couple of years ago."

The bar on the standard for new home amenities just got raised. And KB Home raised it. Solar-power systems will now be a standard feature on all its new Santa Clarita homes, the builder announced this week.

The new housing market is a critical factor in the country’s economic recovery. Unlike resale properties, every new home built adds three new jobs to the economy, according to John Frith, media representative for the Building Industry Association, Santa Clarita region.
